Block paving driveways in Worthing
Hard wearing and easy to repair one block at a time. Permeable blocks available.
What is it?
Block paving is laid on a compacted sub base and bed of sand, with blocks locked together by edging and jointing sand. It handles heavy cars well and a damaged section can be lifted and relaid.
Why people choose it
- Very strong, suits heavy vehicles and vans
- Individual blocks can be lifted for repairs
- Patterns and borders give a lot of design choice
- Permeable block options meet front garden drainage rules
Things to watch
- Standard blocks are not permeable, so drainage has to be designed in
- Weeds and moss can grow in joints without occasional maintenance
- Poor sub base preparation leads to sinking and rutting
- Takes longer to lay than most other surfaces
Rough cost
| Indicative price | £65 to £110 per m² supplied and laid |
|---|---|
| Typical time on site | 3 to 7 days once booked |
Digging out an old surface, drainage, dropped kerbs and difficult access all add to the price. Use the cost guide for a rough figure, then get a firm price from a site visit.
Questions
Herringbone or stretcher bond?
Herringbone (blocks laid at 45 or 90 degrees in a zig zag) locks together best and is the usual choice where cars turn. Stretcher bond is simpler and suits paths and smaller areas.
Do I need permeable block paving?
Not always, but the water must stay on your property and never run onto the pavement or road. Permeable blocks let it soak through. Standard blocks need a linear channel drain at the boundary feeding a soakaway.
How long does block paving last?
Good quality concrete block paving on a proper sub base often lasts 20 years or more, and individual blocks can be replaced as needed.
